TROYAN(25 000 residents) lies 160 km. Northern of Sofia, 120 km. north of Plovdiv , 220 km. southwest of Rouse, and about 300 km. inland of the Black See coast. The town spreads out along the terraced banks of the Beli Osum River at the northern foot of the Troyan – Kalofer ridge of the Balkan Mountains, and is 430-450, above sea level.
The geographical location of Troyan ensures favourable transport links: the Troyan Pass road is the highest one across the Balkan Mountains that connects North to South Bularia. Regular bus-lines run from Troyan to Sofia, Pleven, Lovech, Sevlievo, Apriltsi, Cherve Bryag, and the nearby villages. Troyan is a 130-year old town, but its roots ma well be tracked down to te ancient times. Historians have found traces of both life of a settled Thracian tribe and substantial Roman presence in the region. The town adopted its name from Via Trayana – an ancient Roman road crossing the mountains.
Various crafts flourished over the first half of the 19 century homespun tailoring, metalwork, timbering and woodwork, pottery making, fur trade. Pottery indisputably ranked among the most thriving crafts, for later on it developed into a viable and leading even nowadays school of ceramics in THIS MAGNIFICENT TOWN OF MASTERS – CRAFTSMEN.
MINERAL WATERS
Along the Beli Osym valley a warm mineral water spring combines with thick coniferous woods, lush meadows and swimming-pools on less tan a stretch of land. Local people from the early merged villages of Beli Osym and Chiflik offer accommodation facilities on holiday makers and visitors. Within the park borders are Kozya stena the smallest nature reserve within the National Park and Steneto biospheric nature reserve wit the fauna represented by brown bear, reindeer, wild goat, and a great variety of birds goat, and a great variety of birds. In proximity to Ambaritsa chalet is located a unique karst formation in the form of a rocky arch known as “Krali Marko`s Hole”. The region abounds in caverns and caves insufficiently explored owning to their precipitous character.
The town of Troyan has kept interesting samples of National Revival architecture. The former Konak (today part of the Museum of Traditional Crafts), Serekov House, stone sculptures and façade ornaments, carved iconostases with scenes from the Bible call for admiration even today, and not only among the lovers of fine arts. The churches of St.Paraskeva in Ttoyan and Vsyah Svetih(All Saints) in the village of Golyama Zhelyazna are quite interesting for the visitors.
The Sveti Nikolay Letni Church in Gumoshtnik village is a part of an architectural complex wit cultural, historical and artistic value, with a cell school and museum exposition. In its, yard one could see the exceptional gravestones, including these of local people who lost their lives in the tragedy of Titanic ship.
In the center of Troyan, the only in Bulgaria Museum Of Traditional Crafts and Applied Arts shows samples of crafts produce, which is still alive in this area. Troyan Art School of ceramics is the pride of the town. The works of present day masters are well-known all over the world.
The national Fair-exhibition of Crafts in Oreshak village presents the achievements of modern masters following the tradition of old ones.
