Lovech lies on a hilly area at the foot of the Balkan range and is said to be one of the most ancient settlements in the Bulgarian lands. The earliest traces of human activities go back to the Old Stone and Bronze age. The town was built on the ruins of an ancient Thracian settlement. The Romans, who settled there at the close of the Antiquity, have left priceless evidence of a rich material culture. The town is a haven for tourists who arrive attracted by the characteristic architecture of the houses dating more than 150 years ago. The old quarter of the town, Varosha, is full of 18th and 18th century homes, most of them two-storey, with the ground floor a typical masonry work, and the upper floor made of unstable wooden constructions. The yard is surrounded by high stone walls and is rich in ivy and geranium, lilac and roses. Says Lovech Mayor Mincho Kazandzhiev:
“Lovech is rich in ancient history and architectural styles. The town has preserved landmarks from the major stages of human development: starting from the Antiquity and going as far as the turn of the 20th century. There are nearly 243 sites declared cultural heritage. The medieval Hissarya fortress and the only one of its kind covered bridge in Bulgaria exist side by side. Bulgaria’s second largest zoo occupies a considerable part of Stratesh park, and exhibits more than 200 animal species. A much admired tourist trail goes along the course of the River Ossum and is rich in greenery.”
The covered bridge over the River Ossum was built a couple of centuries ago by Bulgarian legendary master Kolyo Ficheto originally built entirely by wood, it burnt down in a fire, and has been renovated a few times ever since. The bridge spans the old and the new town and houses numerous workshops and small shops, where tourists can have a glimpse at traditional Bulgarian arts and crafts. The municipality has set down to improve the presentation of the rich cultural heritage and has decided to bathe in artificial light the skyline of the medieval fortress that dominates the town and the monument to national hero Vassil Levsky. The town’s lapidarium will feature also a demonstrative platform for gold extraction.
The old town is home also to the Kazakov art gallery that contains some of the greatest works by Bulgarian artist Dimiter Kazakov. The Ethnographical compound with the church of the Holy Virgin, which is cultural heritage and is related to the struggle of the Bulgarian people for the independence of the Bulgarian Orthodox church.
Tourists are given the chance to choose from variety of package services and ecological trails. The Krushun trail, for instance, offers a 40-minute walk through an entirely preserved ecosystem across wooden bridges. The trail goes near a spectacular water cascade that springs from one of the largest caves in the Balkan Peninsula, the Devetashka cave. The cave is the habitat of a large bat colony and has underground lakes and lace-shaped karst formations, as well as huge cracks in the rock from where one is able to catch a glimpse of the blue skies above.
