In the heart of the Rhodope mountains, Smolyan is a socialist architectural masterpiece that serves as an excellent base from which to ski Pamporovo or explore southern Bulgaria's caves and mountains.
Due to the mild weather and picturesque architecture Smolyan boasts an incessant tourist interest.
The renowned Pamporovo resort with an excellent hotel base, numerous holiday homes, ski-runs and attractions is 10 km away from Smolyan.
Location:The territory of the Smolyan municipality is with a mountain relief, with an abundance of coniferous forests and pastures. The average altitude above sea level is about 1 000 m. The Rhodope relief is a combination of high ridges, divided by deep river valleys. The deep valley of the Vacha River divides the West Rhodopes in two parts: Batak-Dabrak and Perelik-Prespa. The Smolyan Hollow, in which the town of Smolyan is situated, is in the Perelik-Prespa part. It has a trough shape with a length 9 km and a width 5 km. The relief of the bottom is terraced, with amphitheatrically ordered slopes one above another, and ends with inaccessible Rhiolithic steep slopes, which lend the region an unusual beauty. Their prismatic weathering has lead to the formation of curious rock shapes. Climate: The average annual temperature is between 7 and 9 degrees Centigrade, and on the ridges of Chernatitsa, Moursalitsa and Prespa it falls to 4-5 degrees. A decrease in the average January temperatures under the influence of the temperature inversion is typical of the hollow regions.
The annual precipitation is within the range between 700 and 900 litres. The main precipitation maximum is in November and December, exceeding the spring-and-summer maximum in May and June.
Mineral Resources:The geological development and the relief are among the main prerequisites for the accumulation of mineral resources. West of Smolyan, downstream the Cherna River, there is an explored deposit of brown bituminous coal. Very important for the satisfaction of the local needs for non-metal mineral resources are the deposits of riolite, sandstone and limestone, which are used in building.
