Sevlievo is situated in the geographical center of Bulgaria and for thousands of years it has been crossroad of different civilizations. More than 100 Thracian grave mounds are preserved in the Sevlievo`s plain and Pre-Balkan. Sevlievo is a city with a ten centuries of history. Its foundation has been established at the end of the X century on a steep hill overlooking the Rositza gorge. The fortress has been an important strategic spot for the defence of the capital Tsarevgrad Turnov. Hotalic has existed till the end of the XVII century, when its functions are taken by the village of Selvi – contemporary Sevlievo. In XVIII and XIX century, the city becomes an important crafts and cultural center. The prosperous Bulgarians – craftsmen and tradesmen, began to invest money in the building of churches, monasteries and schools.
In the April uprising in 1876, the region of Sevlievo took an active participation. In a period of 10 days, battles had been fought. Hundreds were killed, and the leaders of the riot were hanged in the central Sevlievo square.
In the city on a territory of only several square meters, are positioned excessively beautiful cultural – historical and architectural monuments of the time of Bulgarian revival. Monuments of the National Revival Period are the stone bridge of Rositza River built by Master Kolyo Ficheto, the Clock Tower (1779) one of the oldest in Bulgaria, the Churches of Sveta Troitsa ( Holy Trinity) and Sveti Prorok Ilia (St. Prophet Eliajah), whose altar is pure classic with its carvings and icons.
A real magnificence of wood and stone are Dandolovite Houses and Hadzistoyanov School (1846) , today the Historical Museum of the town. The monument of Freedom, dedicated to the memory of hung rebellion leaders in the tragic 1876, stands as the symbol if the town. The museum exposition called “Tabahanata” shows the most developed local craft during National Revival Period, tabaklak (raw leather precessing).
Sevlievo region
The town of Sevlievo is located in Stara Planina mountain region. It lies at a cross-road of the main tourist routes leading to Bulgaria`s major natural and cultural attractions, as well as to the mountain and sea-side resorts. It includes the towns of Tryavna, Dryanovo, Gabrovo, Sevlievo, Apriltsi, Troyan and Teteven. The region offers a mild climate, clear mountain air, warm mineral springs and varied scenery: in short, all you need for a healthy and active holiday.
