LOCATION: Located close to Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo, this small town is a perfect complement to your tourist route. It is popular with the Drianovo Monastery and the Drianovo Ecotrail which will take you to exotic natural recesses. The town of Dryanovo is amphitheatrically situated along the two banks of the Dryanovska River. It lies 22 km. from the city of Gabrovo with its ethnographical sites, 24 km. from the former capital of Bulgaria- Veliko Turnovo, 17 km. from the town of Tryavna, famous for its architectural ensembles and 34 km. from the town of Sevlievo.
The municipality is part of Gabrovo province. It includes the town of Dryanovo together with 62 small settlements. The town could be easily reached by train or by car by the main road Rousse-Stara Zagora.
NATURAL RESOURSES: The municipality benefits from a huge variety of natural forms: magnificent mountain slopes covered with mixed broad-leaved woods, green hills and white limestone cliffs among which are slowly floating the waters of the rivers Yantra and Dryanovska.
The climate in the region is moderately continental characterized by mild winters and warm and fresh summers, which makes Dryanovo a place suitable for holiday during the whole year.
LANDMARKS: Dryanovo is the birthplace of many talented master builders known not only in the country but also abroad.
The town’s main sights are down to the local builder Nikolai Fichev, popularly known as Kolyo Ficheto ( 1800-1881), who became the pride of classical Bulgarian architecture.
He is honoured with his own museum, occupying a modern pavilion in the town centre. The museum contains superb scale models of all Ficheto’s key works, including the church of Sveti Nikola, the original of which lies 200m away on the way to Gabrovo.
DRYANOVO MONASTERY: Dryanovo is mostly of note for its immediate proximity to Dryanovo monastery "St. Archangel Michael", situated 4km west from the town. The monastery is set in a unique landscape of rolling hills, steep rock chains and caves, which boast of a great variety of animals and plants. The illusive seclusion of the place and the impact, which the beauty of nature has on people, are only few of the attractions of Dryanovo Monastery.
Dryanovo Monastery was founded in the Middle Ages, in the times of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, and during the centuries had turned into a centre of Bulgarian culture and education.
The monastery was subsequently destroyed and re-built on two occasions. With the invasion of the Turks it was razed to the ground, then in the course of the years alternately rebuilt, destroyed and resurrected anew. It was restored in its present location - in the Dryanovo River gorge - in 1845.Dryanovo monastery plaid an important part for the preparation of the April Uprising, because supplies of food and weapons were stored there and it gave shelter to the insurgents. The monastery was destroyed and burnt down but was fully reconstructed during the 1890es.
Relics of the April epopee are preserved in the monastery museum today, along with some valuable icons.
Today Dryanovo Monastery is a holy place highly respected by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, a monument of national and historical importance and a site attracting many tourists.
THE ECO TRIAL AND THE CAVE “BACHO KIRO”: The eco trial was built in 2000, near Dryanovo monastery. The circular trail has three panoramic grounds from where the exquisite natural beauties of the monastery can be observed.
"Bacho Kiro" Cave is situated in the picaresque canyons of two rivers, on 300 m. from Dryanovo Monastery "St Archangel Michael", in a vertical limestone cliff with height 25 meters. The cave is a complicated, four storey labyrinth of galleries, formed under the force of underground floating rivers in limestone rocks. The electrified rout for tourist is 700m.
In Bacho Kiro Cave were discovered the most ancient traces of life on Balkan Peninsula.
